About Us

Monkton Under Fives began in the early 1970’s with a group of mums getting together to provide their children an opportunity to interact and develop their social skills through play. Thanks to the generosity of the Men’s Institute they had a central place to meet in the heart of Monkton Village.

In 1972 a mother and toddler group was formed meeting on Wednesday afternoons. This encouraged new mums to get together to support one another and share their concerns. At the same time the children engaged in play, learning to take turns, share and much more. Such was the success of the group that demand rose considerably. It was clear that Monkton Under Fives created a special welcoming atmosphere enjoyed by those in the community and beyond.

Today Monkton Under Fives has stayed close to these roots, ensuring children are nurtured and cared for in a stimulating environment whilst keeping up to date with best practice and all the EYFS has to offer. We offer up to 30 hours childcare a week term-time only and can facilitate those who qualify for 30 hours, 15 hours and FF2. Monkton Under Fives is truly unique - come and take a look!

Key Person

We have a highly effective key person system so that your child quickly establishes strong links with a specific member of staff. This provides your child with a sense of security and belonging and greatly reduces any anxiety that may be felt. The key person records their achievements and assesses their progress, through observations via photographs or videos. Any area of concern we may have with your child’s health, work, play or any other aspect shall be brought to your attention at the earliest moment.
“Staff effectively use observations and assessments to monitor children’s learning. Management accurately monitors and tracks children’s progress. It quickly identifies any gaps in learning and provides any additional support needed.”
(Ofsted, Sept. 2017)
We help your child prepare for entering primary school by using the guidelines of the Early Years Foundation Stage goals which are:

• Communication and language
• Physical Development
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the World
• Expressive Arts and Design

We hope this information gives you a good idea of what you can expect from your child’s preschool educational needs.

Ofsted

We have regular inspections by the government body OFSTED and in our latest inspection in September 2017 we were awarded 'Good' in all areas. We are delighted with this result as it reflects the hard work and dedication of the committee and the experience and enthusiasm our new childcare staff has brought in a very short space of time.

However, not happy to rest easy, our mission is to build on this success and become an ‘Outstanding’ setting. With our incredibly talented and committed team this is something we are confident of achieving. Our latest report can be found by clicking on the link below.

This is the start of an exciting and magical time in your child’s life and we are so glad that we get to travel along this path with them and you.
